Susan Harter's vision evolved from painted furniture to hand-painted murals,
& finally to custom wallpaper. Today, we're a small team of artisans,
personally creating each project in Susan's studio.

Our Murals

& How They're Made

The materials we use in our prints are of the same fine art archival quality as Susan’s original murals. We start with a room-sized mural, hand-painted by Susan, and captured with a trade-secret process. That gives our work exceptionally high fidelity. As a result, each mural looks and feels hand-painted. You can see every brush stroke.

As for our canvas, inks, and varnish, we scoured the globe for the very best products available. The mural customization and printing are done by trained artisans in our own studio, using water-based inks in a wide variety of subtle shades. The soft radiant quality of the work can’t be reproduced with typical commercial printing practices, so we do it all ourselves, in our art studio by the Salish Sea.

Why canvas? Why varnish?

The canvas allows us to capture the luminous quality of the painted work.

The original murals were hand-painted on a fine muslin, coated with artist’s gesso. The wallpaper is printed on an equally high-quality canvas, one coated with a special gesso for printing inks. We have tried other substrates, like paper, but the work seemed dull and lifeless compared to the canvas.

The choice of canvas has a lot of tradition behind it. I used to do all my hand-painted work in the centuries-old French marouflage technique. I’d paint the original work on huge sheets of theatrical muslin in my studio, which would then be carefully rolled up, transported to the client’s home, and installed by a large crew.

Our current process replicates that traditional one in a much more accessible way. I still paint the originals on canvas here in the studio. Then my husband, who used to replicate masterworks for museums, uses a special rig of his own invention to replicate them. A small team of artisans use your room measurements to custom tailor the work for your space, and digitally print it onto rolls of canvas.

The end result looks as if I’d painted the work on canvas, on-site, just for you or your client.

Once installed and varnished with the supplied matte varnish (which is non-yellowing and inert when dried), it should last for up to a century. The varnish comes with a “100 years blue wool certification by the fine art trade guild” so that your fine art canvas prints will last for generations.

Our History

In our studio, refined artistry joins thoughtful innovation.

Susan Harter is a classically-trained artist who studied at Harvard and in realist art academies. She spent twenty years painting murals in some of New England’s finest homes. Her husband Matt, a pressman, replicated masterworks for museums. Together they realized that new digital printing methods were uniquely suited to capturing the soft, ethereal tones and gentle glazes of Susan’s work.

After years of experimentation, they mastered a trade secret method of replicating Susan’s murals, at a level unparalleled in the world of printed mural wallpaper.

Each mural we print possesses the same exquisite character as its original. You can sense the innate quality of the archival canvas, and feel nature’s presence in the fluid movement of the brushstrokes. Each mural is scaled to best suit your residence, and arranged to your liking.

We believe you deserve a mural that fills your home with beauty, delight, and a sense of peace. Susan and her small team of artists give passionate, personalized attention to each project. Every step of the process, from beginning to end, is fulfilled right here in our studio in Port Townsend, WA.
